The ATM (Automated Teller Machine) is an electronic device that lets you perform financial transactions, like withdrawals or deposits of money through the ATM machine, transfer funds, obtain bank account information, and do online/offline shopping too, without interacting with bank staff.
Most modern ATM machines accept the plastic card having a magnetic stripe and/or chip, while some accept NFC (Near Field Communication) enabled cards too.
Customers are identified by inserting a card into the ATM machine with authentication being by the customer entering a four-digit PIN (Personal Identification Number), which must match the PIN stored in the chip on the card.
Setup your ATM Card.
The first use of the ATM card must be on an ATM machine, or else it will be not able to perform electronic transactions at the point of shopping.
Please change the PIN of a card as soon as you receive it, and preferably, change the PIN every three months.
Do not set a predictive PIN that could be easily guessed. e.g., birthday, vehicle number, or telephone.
Do not set a unique PIN for all your ATM/Debit card. Make a signature on the backside of your card. Destroy the document having PIN information once you change it.
Keep Privacy.
Make sure that, you are the only person entering an ATM room, whom you don't know, don't allow him to enter with you.
Make sure to conduct all the transactions in complete privacy, and never let anyone see you entering your PIN (Personal Identification Number).
Shield your PIN from the onlooker by covering the keypad.
Do not wear a helmet or monkey cap while entering an ATM room, this may help to identify suspicious persons during a theft attempt, and you may get an exemption from the list of suspects.
Take care of your card.
Store your card in a secure place where you will immediately know if it is missing.
Store the ATM-cum-debit card carefully so that the magnetic stripe/chip does not get damaged.
Use the case to store your card, do not use two cards in the same case.
Always be updated.
Register your current mobile number and email the bank for getting alerts for all your ATM transactions.
Immediately check your phone for SMS for a debit amount, and check the transaction alert SMSs and bank statements regularly too.
Periodically verify the passbook entries to ensure their correctness. Any unauthorized card transaction in the account if observed should be immediately reported to the Bank.
Remember while performing a transaction.
Ensure that the card is correctly swiped in an ATM machine or swiped in your presence at the point of shopping.
Enter your PIN with privacy and ensure to collect your card and transaction receipt at the end of the transaction, do not leave your card in ATM.
After completion of your transaction and before leaving the ATM room please ensure that the ‘Welcome Screen’ is displayed in the ATM.
If cash is not dispensed the ATM does not display “cash-out”, and immediately reports to the Bank on the number mentioned in the Notice Board.
Immediately check your phone for SMS for a debit amount and keep the last transaction receipt with you.
Don't use public waste receptacles While you are disposing of old receipts and statements.
Be alert.
Keep an eye on suspicious movements of people around ATMs.
Beware of Strangers trying to engage you in conversation.
Look for extra devices attached to the ATMs that looks suspicious, do not perform transaction if found such a device.
Do not take help from strangers or hand over your card to anyone for using it.
Do not disclose your PIN to anyone, including bank employees and friends.
Do not allow the card to go off your sight when you are making a payment.
Avoid speaking on the mobile phone while you are transacting.
Do not write your PIN on the card or cardholder, never carry it in your wallet or purse, and memorize your PIN number.
Lost or stolen card.
Inform the bank if the ATM/Debit card is lost or stolen, immediately, and report any unauthorized transaction.
Block your ATM/Debit card immediately by contacting customer care or the nearest Bank, you may block your card using internet banking too.
Immediately Inform Bank or the nearest police station or dial 100, if the suspicious person asks you for a card number, PIN or OTP, over a phone call or an email.
